Sopranos Prequel Film Casts Michael Gandolfini As Young Tony Soprano

In case the headline didn't quite click as you read it. Deadline reports that the upcoming prequel film to the Sopranos has cast the son of James Gandolfini to play the young version of the character that made his father famous.

Gandolfini is set to play a young Tony Soprano after a rigorous audition process. It would seem that his ability to replicate his father's screen presence and mannerisms mixed with his family resemblance made the choice an easy one for the people in charge.

“It’s a profound honor to continue my dad’s legacy while stepping into the shoes of a young Tony Soprano,” Gandolfini told Deadline. “I’m thrilled that I’m going to have the opportunity to work with David Chase and the incredible company of talent he has assembled for The Many Saints of Newark.”

Michael Gandolfini joins Alessandro Nivola, Vera Farmiga, Jon Bernthal, Billy Magnussen, and Corey Stoll in The Many Saints of Newark. The prequel film is said to be set in the 60's and follows rivalries between the African-American and Italian gangs of that era.
